Day Seventeen: Day off in Phoenix

Yesterday was Stephanie's birthday and we drove from el paso to phoenix in a party van. The van came complete with streamers, balloons, bopping balloons, and the piece de la resistance...a dinosaur lei. We joked that we could have a siesta all day long in the van.
We drove past mexico, which looked like a different country, much less wealthy than even the el paso suburban houses josh and I ran past two days ago on our run. It was very strange to look at such an extreme difference happen less than four miles away from each other. We stopped for lunch at a pizza hut somewhere, either New Mexico or Arizona, off the side of the road and across the street was a field of cotton plants. We may have sampled some of the fresh cotton. It was delightful to rub on my face. The group in the van talked the entire morning...new for us.
We drove through these gorgeous mountains when we got into Arizona. There are gorgeous mountains everyhwere leadning up to Phoenix and all around the city itself. The hotel clerk was making chicken in the microwave while the group was checking in and it started to burn and smoke in the lobby before she realized that she was about to burn down the hotel. It was hilarious because her reaction to the whole situation was to wave her hand in hand in front of her face. I had a moment of sadness yesterday thinking about leavning the group and not seeing them for a few days, I flashed forward in my head to December, and was struck by the tiniest amount of sadness for the when the day comes to end this. I'm sentimental sometimes.
We left the others at the hotel and went to come stay with Jori and Scott for the two days we are in town. We grilled some chicken and looked through this trunk of treasures that they have from a past resident. I always have such a great time staying with Jori and Scott, they are fantastic hosts. After dinner, and almost two liters of Vernors, we met up with the group at a bar downtown for some kareoke and drinks. Everyone in the cast has an awesome kareoke voice. Someone said that we must be a group of actors, and asked us what show we were a part of.
My toes are still injured from the pool at the Hilton. It is taking quite a while for them to heal and none of the bandaids I've put on them are staying put.
Today Josh and Rachel and I are planning on hiking up either Squaw peak or Camelback mountain then off to the local thrift stores for some serious thift store shopping. If we are smiling, smack us, this is serious busines we are attending to.

Arizona smells ...mostly good.
